I found one German walkthrough though. I started translating it into English, but then thought of sharing it with all, since no other English walkthrough was available. General Tips & Tricks

One of my best friends (yeah I have more than one, like everyone I know) always said I think a little too much. Initially I didn’t believe him, but slowly I realized he was right. I realized that I was actually a believer of Sod’s law. Although what I will write here or in my future posts might not be about how my worst fears came true at the worst time, it was just a nod to the fact (and my friend) that I do think too much. So I thought today, that why only think? Why not write it all somewhere to share with others and to read it later?
But, most of the time, thinking is good, especially if you think healthy. What do I think most of the time? Apart from thinking about my woes (yeah my life sucks, like everyone else’s), most of the time I think about this beloved country of mine, her problems, her future, the enormously complex socio-economic-political system here and her triumphant over these, most of the times in the most strange places.

So I kept thinking this for quite a while. This one day I started thinking about the 1984 anti-sikh riots, read about them and as I pondered more about them, I realized what an extraordinary ability of ‘letting it go’ and ‘be in peace’ India has. About 25 years ago (which I firmly believe, is very little time for civilizations as a whole), Sikhs were massacred brutally after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Before that (and even after that, for a while), there was insurgency in Punjab and demand for Khalistan. For the people who were born in late 80s and later, there is always this simple image of a Sikh- an admirable, happy-go-lucky, well-built and if in army (and even if not, just in different ways)-serving mother India with all the fervor he has. It would have never occurred to them that whatever happened in Punjab and the riots, were even possible, seeing how friendly and dedicated to the country Sikhs are. Just after 20-25 years, the bond between Sikhs and Hindus and other religions, grows stronger every day in India. If this isn’t the triumph of India’s ability to assimilate all lovingly under her arms and of Indian civilization to be a melting pot for every civilization and of ability of Indian people as a whole, be it Hindu, Sikh, Christian or Muslims, to let go what happened and become one again?

There is this one more example. An Israeli author, Alex Stein, stated that India should free Kashmir. I, obviously as an Indian, disagree with him here. But that’s not what I wanted to discuss. He formed this opinion while backpacking in Kashmir, when he talked to some people there. Now, everyone knows that Jews face some threats in many Islamic states (Remember Daniel Pearl?). Still, Alex stein moved in a country with over a 15 million Muslims and an over-whelming Muslim state of that country without any fear of harm. Would he be doing same in Pakistan? Not I think. (the whole Alex Stein example is from an article from Nirpal Dhaliwal, although the original article was discussing something different). It’s one more example of this simple fact that India is single civilization out of many with a place for absolutely everyone in some way or another. If only India wasn’t in such an unfortunate position geo-politically (surrounded by three 'highly unstable' and 'terrorized' countries and by one increasingly aggressive emerging power is no joke) and if only the British hadn’t done some really unfortunate experiments on this sub-continent and lastly, if only there weren’t some powerful people damaging the country only to keep their power, we would have become mystically beautiful and stable as a country. It’s still a wonder that after so many unfortunate events, we let go them all and stood strong as a country and as a civilization as whole. This is the wonder we discussed above and I firmly believe that it might not solve every single problem we have here, but it will certainly keep us together.

Highway through hell sure is bloody, but it isn’t bad

Fact- I hate World War II games.

Fact for this game- I loved this game.

Fact- I hate Unreal Engine 3 graphics.

Fact for this game- I loved its graphics.

The two above listed facts are huge problems for me. I absolutely hate WW II games and UE3. This game has both of these as its basis, but I loved it still. Its saying a lot, and it’s because of the wonderful blend of traditional ingredients of game- a great emotional story, a engaging gameplay and striking graphics.

Still following Sgt. Matt baker, the game is a recreation of Operation market garden of WW II, where allied forces were dropped behind enemy lines in The Netherlands to secure multiple bridges. It isn’t story about how the war ended, but its story of one man, Sgt. Baker, of how he lost his man in the bloodbath and how he handled it.

Graphics-

Probably the first thing you would notice about the game. If you have played Unreal Engine 3.0 in a few games before and know how the engine looks, you would be absolutely dazzled by the wide open and colorful environments here. The lighting is amazing and colors are vivid. UE3 is infamous for aliasing, but there is very little of it to be found here. It runs well too, and on my modest machine I got 60FPS average. Some reviewers said something about 2-D grass. I didn’t get the term. Granted that the grass doesn’t move when we move through, but then there is no game other than Crysis where it does. This grass is probably the best grass I have seen, barring Crysis of course.

And ah, the rain effects! This game has the best in-game rain I have ever seen. Screenshots wont do justice, you just have to see the rain while playing the game to see how atmospheric it is.

Gameplay- Consider it as a hybrid of Rainbow six: Vegas, Call of Duty and Company of heroes. It takes the cover system and buddy controlling schemes of Vegas, imagery of Call of Duty and strategic techniques of Company of heroes (on a much smaller level though). So basically, it takes good points of three awesome games and mixes them up to make something great. Not to say that its better than any of these games, cause it does feel repetitive sometimes. But its great nonetheless.

The cover system is made very very necessary. If you don’t use it, you would be toast. Although this same thing stems this problem that because of this, sometimes the buddies seem useless. It feels that even if they weren’t there, we single handedly could have finished the game. And this becomes more evident when we begin to notice that our AI buddies don’t kill most of the time. Almost all of the time, it was me who killed enemies, AI suppresses them at most.

Also, the cover system is wonky a bit of times. It happened numerous times that I was unable to take cover to something from which I just took a moment ago. Because of this, I died in same spot three times.

Presentation/AI/Sound- The story takes the cake here. It’s not grand as Saving Private Ryan and its also not about how WW II was won. It’s just about a guy and his boys. How they go through hell, loose friends and cope with it. The end, although kind of a cliffhanger, is wonderful and will leave you pumped up for a sequel.

The music is A-grade. You would feel this right from the start when the intro menu will be backed up by emotionally charging music. The sound effects are really great. I hate those games which don’t support surround sound properly, but this isn’t one of them. Even though my Sound blaster live 5.1 is an old card, I was able to get proper surround sound with awesome effects. These effects are really noticeable when your buddies move or talk behind you.

AI is decent. Its not great (I actually am starting to realize that I am saying this for every other game. No games I reviewed had very bad AI and neither of them had very good one either). If I could say one line about it, I would say- “it gets the job done”.

Final words-

It’s amazing to where Gearbox have come from their modest start as a modding team. This game does not fills fresh air in the lungs of a dying sub-genre called WW II games, and rightfully so cause there is no need of that as this genre had its run and it should be allowed to die a respectful death (but subpar games like Hour of victory won’t let it do so will they?), but it does make it proud. There will be a sequel and I would be there to play it, but if this was the swan song of WW II games, they couldn’t have asked for a better one.

After thinking about it for about 2 years, after mulling over it for so long, I finally have arrived on the decision. What is it actually? I would start with some elaboration on the topic itself.

Everyone, at some point in his/her life, gets a fantasy if being all alone. The idea of being all alone, with no relatives, doing what you want to do and with no responsibility of anyone else, is sometimes very seductive. Most persons get over it soon, and it becomes less and less interesting as someone matures. Well….most of the time.

It probably started when I first watched ‘About a boy’. Not that the idea wasn’t there already. It was there for quite long, but in traces and pieces. After watching that movie, I strangely started thinking more and more about it. The prime reason, that I started thinking about it so much only after watching that movie, was that I could attach myself to the lead character- Will, from the movie. He was immature despite of his age, and so am I in many senses (my mom would agree whole-heartedly here).

But what took me so long to decide then, was that while Will was quite old, I am not. So there was a chance that I might become mature, in common sensual way. It would actually seem strange to most people, cause there is this perfectly stable argument that many more people at my age are just like me, careless and immature. That might be true, what problem with me is that I haven’t changed from last 4 years. I am the same as I was 4 years back. Obviously, I don’t mean it physically or academically. I am beckoning towards maturity.

It is so easy to see once you visualize yourself married. You have a family to take care of, there are so many responsibilities-of you and of others, there are children, there are family problems, there are increased chances of financial problems, you can’t give enough time to yourself and to what you like most (in my case, its Video gaming) and so many other problems. I know there are so many other blessings, if you have a family. They are your emotional support, moral net, they take care of you mutually and although I haven’t felt it, I can feel how heavenly it must be to take your child in your arms. And to many, these blessings far outweigh the problems. So true it might be. The dilemma I have doesn’t arise cause I think that goodies aren’t worth the hassle here, but because I am completely incompatible in handling the problems. I can’t even take care of myself, let alone others. I am so disorganized myself that it’s impossible for me to even think of organizing a family. I know I can’t, and I will never be able to take responsibility for something that big.

Secondly, there is obviously the fascination of being completely free, like a bird. No one to hold you back, from doing whatever you want to do. And nowhere to force you, for anything you didn’t want to do. There are no desires for others. All you need to do is for yourself; don’t have to justify your actions to anyone. Whole life becomes an adventure. Sure there would be many regrets when you will die, and no one will be there who carried your blood. But there would be far less regrets for things you wanted to do and you didn’t. There will be satisfaction that you lived your whole life as a child, with no hold barred. There would be chance of making the whole world your own, when you won’t have any of your own.

Not only that, it also removes many tensions which are now. There is an unsaid tradition that parents start looking for a suitable boy/girl for their children as soon as they hit 20-22 (which is earlier for girls in most of the times), and the child also has to groom himself/herself so that he/she gets the best one can think of. No need to say, this constant hope puts an unnecessary pressure on the child. Then as soon as you hit 25, and are still not married, hell breaks loose. I have seen relative of mine, who is about 30-31 and is desperate to get married. She earns fine and has a fine family, then why the rush? She is ready to marry almost anyone, just because she can’t take constant stares and questions from society and relatives anymore. How complicated things have become? What if there was no requirement of getting married? Do it if you want, don’t if you don’t? All I want to say here is that, if you decide not to get married, or get whenever you wanted, you will be far more relaxed now. All tension of becoming a high-earning lad just so that you get someone good, tension of doing what you don’t want to do and tension of wrapping everything up before 25 will be gone.

Still, someone can say it’s just spur of the moment thing, and that I would be thinking otherwise after 4-5 years. That just might be the case, but it doesn’t feel like that to me. It’s been over two years since I started thinking about it, and the decision I have arrived on is firm. I have decided not to get married, ever.

And also, it’s not the case that there is no one I want as my companion. There is someone whom I would like to be with me forever and ever, but I won’t be able to take care of her properly. I will be a disaster if we will be together. And it’s also not about changing. If it’s in my hand, I would change myself. But then, I won’t be me anymore. There is no denying that I like, and hate too, myself. All those are parts of who I am. If I change, and become a guy perfect for relationships, then obviously that won’t be me anymore. I also know that I won’t be able to hold her forever if I don’t decide to marry her, and that’s what troubles me most about my decision. But it’s also true that if I marry, it would be an absolute disaster. It won’t be the same beautiful thing it’s right now. It would become something much more complicated, something unimaginably tangled. I don’t want it to become like that, from what its right now.

In the end, these are my fascinations and my deficiencies that make it. But that’s me who, complimentarily, just not suited for this thing.
